Usually, the doctor or any qualified healthcare provider can easily diagnose if you have a rotator cuff injury by doing physical exam. You will be asked to perform some movements to determine if you are experiencing pain while doing so and to assess its severity. You shoulders will also be checked for swelling or any other irregularities. These are typically enough for them to diagnose the condition.
However, there are some instances that they will require further examination such as X-ray if there is a need to rule out other conditions such as bone spurs or arthritis or fracture. To make sure if there are tears in the tendon or other unrecognizable underlying causes, you may be subjected an ultrasound or an MRI.
