How Contagious is Shingles

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. While shingles itself is not directly contagious, it can transmit the varicella-zoster virus to individuals who have not had chickenpox before or have not been vaccinated against it. Here's what you should know about the contagiousness of shingles:

• Direct contact: Shingles can be transmitted through direct contact with the fluid-filled blisters of an active shingles rash.
• Chickenpox transmission: If someone who has not had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine comes into contact with the fluid from shingles blisters, they may develop chickenpox.
• Airborne transmission: The varicella-zoster virus can be transmitted through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

To prevent the spread of the virus, individuals with shingles should avoid direct contact with vulnerable individuals, such as pregnant women, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems.
